Cleanings and Periodontal Treatment in McKinney, TX
Dr. Kent Norwood Can Provide You with Revitalized Oral Health
Dr. Norwood is concerned not only with the health of his patients’ teeth, but also their overall dental health. Having strong, beautiful teeth is only part of the equation. Healthy gums are also important, both for the health of your teeth and your body. If you have any cosmetic or restorative dental work done, it is important to place the restorations in healthy gums. When periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) is present, your overall health can start to deteriorate along with your dental health.
We provide exceptional routine care and more complex scaling and root planing when necessary. The gum tissues are an indicator of active disease. At each visit, we will do an evaluation of the tissue health, an oral cancer screening, an examination for tooth pathology, X-rays (if necessary), and tooth cleaning.
Long standing plaque will eventually calcify and turn into hard deposits called calculus (tartar). If this is not removed, it acts as an irritant to the tissues and leads to inflammation (sore gums, bleeding). Inflammation can ultimately cause loss of gum tissue and bone around the teeth. This in turn can lead to undesirable appearances, loose teeth, and tooth loss. When tartar forms below the gums, scaling and root planing may be necessary. This type of cleaning may require multiple appointments.
